Why do I need a representative to help me with my sales tax audit?

Technically, you do not have to have a representative assist you with your sales tax audit, at least not in California. However, having an experienced and knowledgeable sales tax expert assist you with your audit will help ensure that you are on a more level playing field with the auditor. You want to be sure that you have someone representing you who knows at least as much, and hopefully, more than the auditor knows about how the sales and use tax applies to your operations.

Do I need an attorney to represent me?

You do not need an attorney to represent you for California Sales and Use Tax purposes. The law allows you to be represented by any adult of your choosing. It is far more critical for you to have a representative with specific experience and proven results dealing with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration and sales and use tax audits. Only when attorney-client privilege is necessary is there a fundamental distinction between an attorney and our consultants.
